Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS) and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) have marked the christening of *Terra Clove*, a 93,000-cubic-metre Very Large Ammonia Carrier (VLAC) equipped with ammonia dual-fuel propulsion technology.

The naming ceremony took place at HD Hyundai Heavy Industries’ shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea, marking a milestone in the development of ammonia-powered commercial shipping.

*Terra Clove* is EPS’ first ammonia dual-fuel vessel and the first ammonia dual-fuel commercial newbuild to be registered under the Singapore Registry of Ships.

The vessel is expected to be delivered in November 2026, following its upcoming sea trials.

## New ammonia carrier equipped with commercial dual-fuel engine

The vessel is equipped with Everllence’s first commercial ammonia dual-fuel two-stroke marine engine, which successfully completed factory acceptance testing in April 2026.

Designed to transport ammonia as cargo while also using it as a propulsion fuel, *Terra Clove* incorporates specialised fuel handling, containment and safety systems.

The vessel is the first of two ammonia dual-fuel VLACs being built by HD Hyundai Heavy Industries for Eastern Pacific Shipping. Both vessels are intended to operate under the Singapore flag.

The project originated from a collaboration established in June 2022 between MPA, EPS, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries and the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The initiative brought together shipbuilding, classification, regulatory and shipowning expertise to support the development of a commercial gas carrier capable of using ammonia as fuel.

## Singapore supports development of ammonia-powered shipping

As Singapore’s flag administration, MPA has worked with the project partners to address the vessel’s technical and regulatory requirements.

This included reviewing the ship’s design against relevant International Maritime Organization guidelines and participating in hazard identification and operability studies.

The authority also provided guidance on ammonia detection, fuel system safety and emissions management.

Experience gained from earlier ammonia trials in Singapore was used to support the development of onboard safety procedures and crew preparedness.

These measures are particularly important for ammonia-fuelled vessels because of the fuel’s toxicity and the specialised systems required for its safe storage, handling and use.

Ang Wee Keong, Chief Executive of MPA, said cooperation across the maritime industry can help address technical uncertainties and investment risks associated with emerging marine fuels.

He expressed hope that the development of *Terra Clove* would strengthen industry confidence in ammonia as a marine fuel.

## Delivery expected after sea trials

The naming of *Terra Clove* represents an important step towards the vessel’s entry into commercial service, although construction and commissioning have not yet been completed.

Sea trials are scheduled to take place before its expected delivery in November 2026.

Cyril Ducau, Chief Executive Officer of Eastern Pacific Shipping, emphasised that the company’s priority extends beyond developing ammonia propulsion technology to ensuring its safe and practical operation.

The project highlights growing efforts to develop vessels capable of transporting ammonia while using the same fuel for propulsion.

However, the announcement does not provide quantified fuel consumption or greenhouse gas emissions performance from commercial operations.

With its planned delivery approaching, *Terra Clove* represents a significant milestone for Eastern Pacific Shipping and Singapore’s maritime sector as the industry advances the technical and regulatory framework for ammonia-fuelled vessels.
