Arctic Gateway Group, CentrePort Canada and DP World Canada have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore opportunities for expanding trade through Manitoba and strengthening connections between Canadian transportation infrastructure and international markets.

The agreement focuses on port operations, logistics services and the potential development of an integrated transportation corridor linking the Port of Churchill, the Hudson Bay Railway, CentrePort Canada and DP World’s global logistics network.

The three organisations aim to identify opportunities for improving supply chain connectivity and providing Canadian exporters with additional routes to overseas markets. The memorandum establishes a framework for cooperation rather than a confirmed infrastructure investment or construction programme.

## Connecting Churchill with inland logistics networks

Arctic Gateway Group owns and operates the Port of Churchill and the Hudson Bay Railway, which provides rail access to the northern port. Its infrastructure supports shipments of commodities from Western Canada to international markets.

The Port of Churchill has handled an increasingly diverse range of cargoes, including grain, potash, critical minerals and supplies destined for communities in Nunavut. Arctic Gateway Group is also exploring opportunities to attract private investment to modernise the port and expand export activity.

CentrePort Canada operates as a major inland logistics and trade hub, connecting businesses with road, rail and air cargo services. The organisation has attracted approximately CA$1.5 billion in private investment in recent years and accommodates more than 1,000 companies.

More than 3.5 million square feet of industrial space has been developed or is under construction at CentrePort over the past eight years, reflecting the expansion of logistics and industrial activity in the region.

## DP World to explore international trade connections

Through the agreement, DP World will contribute its experience in port terminal operations, cargo logistics and international supply chain services.

The company handles more than one million TEUs annually in Canada and operates a global network of ports, terminals and logistics facilities.

The partners will examine how Manitoba’s northern and inland infrastructure could connect more effectively with existing international transport networks. Potential opportunities include intermodal connections between Europe and Asia through Canada, although no specific new service or investment commitment has been announced.

Chris Avery, President and CEO of Arctic Gateway Group, said closer integration between Churchill and Manitoba’s inland transportation infrastructure could help connect Western Canadian resources with additional international markets.

Doug Smith, CEO of DP World in Canada, described the agreement as an opportunity to explore how the Port of Churchill, Hudson Bay Railway and CentrePort Canada could work more closely with DP World’s logistics network.

## Diversifying Canada’s trade routes

The proposed cooperation comes amid efforts to strengthen Canadian supply chains and develop alternative transportation corridors for international trade.

CentrePort Canada connects with four major trade gateways: the Arctic route through Churchill, the Mid-Continent corridor, the Asia-Pacific gateway and eastern Canadian routes.

By examining links between these networks, the three organisations intend to assess opportunities for more efficient cargo movements and improved market access for Canadian businesses.

The next steps will depend on further discussions and the identification of commercially viable projects. The announcement does not specify an implementation timetable, committed investment or binding development agreements.
