Danaos Corporation has announced that Moody’s Ratings has revised the outlook on its Ba1 Corporate Family Rating from stable to positive, while upgrading the rating of its senior unsecured notes from Ba2 to Ba1.

The decision reflects the credit rating agency’s assessment of Danaos’ financial position, including its contracted revenue base, substantial cash balances and approach to debt management.

The company’s Corporate Family Rating remains unchanged at Ba1. The improvement concerns its outlook and the separate rating assigned to its senior unsecured notes.

## Long-term charter contracts support credit profile

According to Danaos, Moody’s highlighted the company’s established position among the world’s largest independent containership owners and the earnings visibility provided by its portfolio of long-term, fixed-rate charters.

As of 30 June 2026, Danaos had approximately US$4.6 billion in contracted revenue, with an average remaining charter duration of 4.7 years. The company also reported cash balances of approximately US$1 billion.

Moody’s cited these factors as supporting strong credit metrics and the company’s ability to withstand potentially weaker conditions in the containership charter market.

The agency also recognised Danaos’ record of generating positive free cash flow and its financial policy of prioritising debt reduction ahead of shareholder distributions.

## Financial discipline recognised by Moody’s

Evangelos Chatzis, Chief Financial Officer of Danaos, welcomed the rating actions, noting that they reflected the company’s balance sheet strength, long-term charter backlog and disciplined capital structure management.

The positive outlook indicates an improved assessment of the company’s credit prospects, although it does not constitute an upgrade of the Ba1 Corporate Family Rating itself.

The upgrade of the senior unsecured notes to Ba1 represents a separate improvement in the credit assessment of those debt instruments.

For Danaos, the rating actions come as its contracted containership charter portfolio continues to provide visibility over future revenue, supported by its cash position and financial management strategy.
