Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC) has signed a new five-year agreement with Elk Valley Resources (EVR), expanding its role in transporting Canadian steelmaking coal to export terminals on the country’s Pacific coast.

The agreement, which takes effect on 1 January 2027, covers rail transportation from EVR’s four steelmaking coal mines in British Columbia to Westshore Terminals and Neptune Terminals in Vancouver. It renews and expands the existing commercial relationship between the two companies.

Under the revised arrangement, CPKC is expected to handle a larger share of EVR’s steelmaking coal shipments, increasing volumes transported directly to Vancouver’s export facilities through the railway operator’s network.

EVR is CPKC’s largest coal customer, while the railway company identifies itself as Canada’s leading transporter of steelmaking coal. The expanded agreement strengthens an established supply chain linking mining operations in British Columbia with seaborne export markets.

Keith Creel, President and Chief Executive Officer of CPKC, said the agreement represented an expansion of the companies’ existing relationship and reflected the railway’s direct connection to Vancouver export terminals.

Mike Carrucan, Chief Executive Officer of EVR, said the agreement built on the companies’ longstanding cooperation in transporting Canadian steelmaking coal to international customers.

### Rail connections to Vancouver export terminals

The agreement covers shipments to Westshore Terminals and Neptune Terminals, two facilities serving the export of bulk commodities from Canada’s Pacific coast.

For CPKC, the arrangement provides an opportunity to increase the volume of steelmaking coal carried over its network, while maintaining rail connections between EVR’s mining operations and Vancouver’s export infrastructure.

Steelmaking coal is used in conventional steel production and forms part of international dry bulk commodity trade. The movement of this cargo from inland production areas to coastal terminals depends on coordinated rail transportation and port handling operations.

CPKC operates a transnational railway network connecting Canada, the United States and Mexico, providing freight services to industrial, agricultural and commercial customers.

The companies have not disclosed the financial terms of the agreement or specified the additional annual tonnage expected to be transported.

The renewed arrangement will become effective at the beginning of 2027, extending the companies’ rail freight relationship for another five years.
