CMA CGM and ENGIE have signed a framework agreement to develop a biomethane production facility in the industrial-port area of Le Havre, France, as the two companies expand their cooperation on renewable marine fuels.

The proposed facility is expected to produce approximately 7,000 tonnes of biomethane annually, equivalent to 100 GWh, for use by CMA CGM’s fleet. Production is planned to begin in 2029/2030, subject to the project’s development and investment approvals.

ENGIE will lead the technical development and permitting process and, following a final investment decision, would oversee construction and operation. CMA CGM plans to participate as a minority shareholder through PULSE, its energy investment fund.

## Proposed facility to support marine fuel supply

The project will process livestock waste, household biowaste and agricultural residues into biomethane, which would be supplied to CMA CGM through the European gas grid under a certified mass-balance system.

According to the companies, the fuel can be used by CMA CGM’s LNG-powered vessels without modifications to their engines or existing LNG bunkering infrastructure.

The partners estimate that the planned production could avoid approximately 23,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually. They also expect the facility to produce 100,000 tonnes of digestate for agricultural use and recover 13,000 tonnes of biogenic CO₂ for commercialisation.

These figures represent projected outcomes rather than production or emissions reductions already achieved.

## Partnership builds on earlier cooperation

The development extends a partnership established between CMA CGM and ENGIE in 2021 to support renewable fuel production and distribution for shipping.

CMA CGM expects more than 200 dual-fuel vessels capable of using alternative fuels to have joined its fleet by 2030. The company states that biomethane can reduce lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by at least 67% compared with conventional marine fuels.

ENGIE, meanwhile, aims to increase its annual European biomethane production capacity from 1.2 TWh to 10 TWh by 2035.

The companies are also considering further renewable fuel initiatives in France and elsewhere in Europe.

However, the Le Havre project remains subject to a final investment decision, and the partners have not disclosed its investment cost or a confirmed construction timetable.
