Canadian software investor Banyan Software has acquired Carus Ferry Ab Ltd, a Finland-based provider of reservation, check-in and port operations systems used by ferry and passenger shipping companies.

The acquisition brings Carus into Banyan’s portfolio of specialised software businesses, while the company will continue operating independently under the leadership of its founder and Chief Executive Officer, Anders Rundberg.

Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.

Headquartered in Mariehamn on Finland’s Åland Islands, Carus provides software solutions to approximately 30 ferry operators across four continents. Its systems support activities ranging from passenger bookings and vehicle reservations to port check-in, boarding and onboard transactions.

## Carus to retain independent operations

Following the acquisition, Carus will remain a standalone business, with Rundberg continuing to oversee its operations and development.

The company previously operated within the Winpos Group for approximately eight years before joining Banyan Software.

Carus develops technology used in the daily management of ferry services, including capacity allocation for passengers, vehicles and freight, departure control and port automation.

Its systems are designed to coordinate bookings with available vessel capacity and support the movement of passengers and cargo through ferry terminals.

The company’s software portfolio also includes onboard sales and business information systems.

## Banyan expands Nordic software portfolio

The transaction increases Banyan Software’s presence in the Nordic region, where it now operates three businesses.

Banyan specialises in acquiring established software companies and maintaining them as independently operated businesses under long-term ownership.

For Carus, the acquisition represents a change in ownership rather than an announced operational restructuring.

Rundberg, who previously worked at Viking Line, developed the company’s original ferry reservation and check-in technology, which entered service in 1999.

The acquisition does not include any announced changes to Carus’s existing customer contracts, management structure or product portfolio.
